The primary service of Chartwell's Sales Tax division is "Refund Review". Through this review, Chartwell identifies and documents those areas where sales tax has been improperly charged to and paid by our clients and for which a refund may be sought. These overpayments may have occurred as a result of the client's unfamiliarity with an exemption from tax provided by the sales tax laws, clerical errors, or as a result of Chartwell’s ability to develop an interpretation of the state’s sales tax laws which would provide an exemption from taxation. Through it’s trained technical staff, many of whom are former state sales tax auditors, Chartwell prepares a "Petition for Refund" which provides the necessary support for the refund request and attends all hearings in connection with such petition. Once a decision is reached, Chartwell receives any refunds awarded to the client under its Power of Attorney and then forwards such refunds to its client along with its invoice for services rendered. Chartwell’s fee is based upon a fixed percentage of all refunds received.
